Mokume-Gane

Mokume-gane is a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns.

This particular sample was my first attempt at it.  It’s (in this case) made from a stack of US Quarters.

I plan to carve a little heart-shaped pendant out of it.  Valentines Day is coming up!

Moron of the Week

More and more, Americans are witnessing the impacts of climate change in their own backyards, including sea-level rise, longer growing seasons, changes in river flows, increases in heavy downpours, earlier snowmelt and extended ice-free seasons in our waters.

Bye bye, Dillsboro dam!

Good riddance.

What did you do today?

Here’s what I did:

anvil stand

I took my existing angle iron anvil stand that was way too light and bouncy, plated all the sides with 12 gauge steel, and filled it with sand.  That sucker’s not goin’ nowhere now!

I estimate 36 lineal feet of welding and 200 pounds of sand.

The Obamarang by Victor Davis Hanson

All politicians fudge on their promises. But this president manages to transcend the normal political exaggeration and dissimulation. Whereas past executives shaded the truth, Barack Obama trumps that: on almost every key issue, what Obama says he will do, and what he says is true, is a clear guide to what he will not do, and what is not true. It is as if “truth” is a mere problem of lesser mortals.

Moron of the Week

Tonight the president engaged in demogoguery of the worst kind, when he claimed that last week’s Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, “open[ed] the floodgates for special interests — including foreign corporations — to spend without limit in our elections. Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities.”

The president’s statement is false.

This is either blithering ignorance of the law or demagoguery of the worst kind.

Moron of the Week

It was not a referendum on Barack Obama, who in every poll remains one of the most popular politicians in America. It was not a rejection of universal health care… It was not a harbinger of a resurgent G.O.P., whose numbers remain in the toilet.

Waterfalls in Winter

It’s been very cold here for the past two weeks. In fact, it stayed below freezing every day for about ten days straight. As you can imagine, ice has been building up.

Over Cowee mountain, looking towards Franklin

Heading up the Cullasaja gorge

Cullasaja Falls

Dry Falls

The trail down to the falls was a bit icy

Getting closer

Closer...

I don't think I'll go behind the falls today

Cold, cold, cold

Close enough

Trapped in the ice

We weren't the only nutballs

Bridal Veil Falls

Don't stand underneath

Bridal Veil Falls

No drive-thru today

That’s All Folks!
